Thodee

Hi. I’m Thodee. Adau thinks I should do hiphop more, but I want to be a basketball player. It’s like when I play basketball people think I’m cool, but its different when I go for a job or catch up with my friends. I know what they are thinking and I hate that because I just want to do my best and make my mum proud.

Adau

Hi. My name is Adau. I’m happy with my life but sometimes it is hard being stuck between 2 cultures especially with the problems we are facing. I really want to help our community more to be recognised and accepted but you get racism on one side and old beliefs about females on the other side. Still I always stay positive. I hope this dialogue helps things.

Adut

My name is Adut. I sometimes don't know how to do with my life here. I worry about my son. He is going to get trouble from the freedom he learns here. I know I come here for freedom too, but there is too much freedom here. I have to protect him as his mum, but this country doesn't let me teach him the right way. I just hope I don't lose him or he ends up in jail.

Chol

I am Chol. Since I joined the community patrol, I have found there are many police and other people who support us. We don't pretend there are not problems with some of our boys, but the media are not fair. They don't show how hard we are trying to solve the problems and I want Australian society to see the positive things in our community. We have to build bridges. Thank you for coming to share with us.

Moudit

Hello, I am Moudit. Sometimes people call me Uncle Mou. I am a community leader. I am thankful for Australia but I miss my homeland too. It is important that we don't lose connection with South Sudan. I know things are difficult here but don't forget the war is much worse there. Its crucial that our young people stay close to their culture and it is my responsibility to keep teaching them our Dinka ways.

Angus

I am Angus. I am a community development worker. Chol has Kindly invited me to engage with his community and I have had the privilege to get to know the family here over the last 2 weeks. I hope my dialogue technique will be of some use but I worry about the high expectations. I just feel I want to play a role to help somehow. I have had people ask me what they are doing to stop the home invasions and I would like to be able to respond with some confidence.
